Types of Tanning Bulbs and Lamps

It's a fact that tanning lamps are the most foremost parts of indoor tanning beds. Without them, how on earth will you get that nice tan you desire? Therefore, knowing their significance is vital to getting a good bed and having the tan you like.

If you're a member of an indoor tanning salon, you've probably heard about the different kinds of beds and bulbs. Some types are more high-priced since they use different types of light or make a long-lasting tan. But perhaps you're wondering how different the bulbs no ifs ands or buts are and how they influence your health. Before buying any tanning bed, understand exactly what you're getting.

Tanning bulbs give you a tan by mimicking the sun. The lamps generate the same kind of light found in fluorescent light bulbs. However, the light is changed before it exits the bulb through different methods. These methods make ultraviolet light A and B (Uv-A and Uv-B) that tans your skin.

There are different types of tanning bulbs. Some lamps emit higher Uv-A rays while others give off higher Uv-B. This results in a darker, faster tan but it can cause serious sunburns and should be tried only after tanning for a while. High pressure lamps give out mostly Uv-A rays and are also good for tanning but these tans need more maintenance.

The low-pressure lamp or fluorescent lamp is a gas-discharge lamp that works differently from the high-pressure mercury lamp. Its gas pressure is lower and is not contained in a clear layer. Like other gas-discharge lamps, a discharge occurs when a stream of electrons hits the molecules of mercury vapor. These come to be "excited" or get excess vigor that is emitted as ultraviolet radiation.
